Hi everyone,
There's been a lot of discussion lately regarding Admins and Moderators, and we wanted to clear up some misunderstandings. It's important to understand that an Admin role is not a "promotion" for Moderators. They are completely separate roles with very little in common, other than the desire to provide a great Minecraft experience for everyone!
Admins:
What do they do? Administrate the server. These people monitor the server software, research/add/configure/test plugins, set up permissions, troubleshoot technical issues, tune server performance, maintain the server hardware, etc. If someone is an admin, they should have access to the server console, the servers files and all the required tools to manage a server.
What should there previous knowledge be? Admins need to know how to run a server and how a server works. They should have previous knowledge! They need to be able to know how to add plugins, configure plugins, and other general knowledge for running a server. They should have a deep understanding of how the server operates at a (Bukkit specific) technical level. Ideally, this includes knowledge of Bukkit events and how plugin interaction works.
Moderators:
What do they do? Moderate the content that is on the server. These people should be able to kick, ban, view logs on the server for who built and destroy, etc. They should be very trusted but not really have too many in-game advantages.
What should there previous knowledge be? Moderators will need to know a collection of in-game commands to help with them with their moderation duties. They will need to be able to know how to kick, ban, and view logs, depending on which plugins you use. Moderators must have personal qualities such as patience, good communication and compassion. Most importantly they must have strong interpersonal skills!
Everyone loves an analogy!
Moderators are like school teachers: They teach the students, monitor the playground for trouble and stop any fights. They help with any small issues and refer the sick/difficult kids to the office staff. This role takes a particular type of person with patience, tolerance and a passion for what they do.
Admins are like the office staff: They keep the school running. They make sure the school maintenance is kept up. They deal with the money and with the paperwork. They handle the more extreme issues with the difficult kids. Most importantly, they ensure the teachers can do their job sufficiently and that the school can function properly.
Most teachers couldn't and wouldn't want to be office staff.
Most office staff couldn't and wouldn't want to be school teachers.
We hope this will help remove any confusion and end all further discussion on the matter.
Thank you.
Addstar MC Team.
