Addstar MC is expanding to become a server network (with a hub)!!!
Approximately 6 months ago we started a massive secret project. The project had one main goal:
Convert our single "mega" server into a multiple "mini" servers and continue to keep our focus on community.
At the time it seemed like a just a dream that would never be possible. But 6 months later, after hundreds of hours of hard work and some pretty serious dedication from some amazing people, we are extremely proud to announce the project is almost ready!
We will be separating many of our worlds into their own servers which will be accessed via a hub server
The separation will ensure much less lag and independent servers will mean we can shutdown each server (eg. skyblock) to perform maintenance without affecting players on any other server. This also means that if we have a crash or lag spikes on a particular server (eg. survival) it won't impact people playing games
Q. When will the server network be open?
We have been working on the server network for many months and it's very close! We don't know exactly when but we are hoping to open it up to the public within the next 3-4 weeks (by the end of September). We will keep you updated as we get closer. But please don't nag staff about the opening date
Q. Do I need to use a different server IP or address?
No. There will be no change to the IP! You will still be able to connect in exactly the same way.
The server will still have the same address as always: mc.addstar.com.au
Q. Will there be a hub?
Yes! We will have a hub server for you to explore which will have portals to each of the other servers.
You can type /hub at any time to return to the hub or use a Hub Portal in the lobby of the server you are in.
Q. How will I switch between the servers (skyblock, survival, creative, etc)?
It will work the same way as it does now. Just walk through a portal and it will take you there. There will also be some shortcut commands to take you directly to some servers.
Q. Can I chat to a player who is in skyblock and I am in the hub?
Yes! For now, chat is global just like our current server. It doesn't matter which Addstar server your friends are on, everyone can see the public chat and you can still /msg someone on another server.
Q. Will the Survival world or Skyblock world be reset?
No! The maps will stay the same; all of your builds, items, homes and claims will be transferred over seamlessly when we migrate to the new server network.
Q. What new exciting games/worlds will there be?
Due to the amount of work and time involved in building everything, at the beginning we won't open any major new games or worlds. But don't worry, we have many new ideas that we are planning to implement soon!
Q. Will everything be working perfectly from the start?
We hope the most critical stuff is working well.. but as can be expected with any major change of this size, please understand that there is likely to be some problems! We ask that you all have patience during the first weeks of migration while everything settles down. We may have some things disabled at the beginning while we finish the migration. I'm sure there will be many things forgotten and we will be working like crazy to make sure everything goes well!
Also.. you should probably expect regular restarts of some servers while we fix things! But remember: individual servers can be restarted now.. if you are on Survival and we restart Skyblock you won't even notice
Q. This all sounds very cool, but I'm interested in technical stuff.. how does all that work?
For a long time now, we have been using a modified version of CraftBukkit called Spigot. This provides us with a far greater ability to fine tune server performance and reduces lag. The team that created Spigot also created something called BungeeCord. This is basically a clever proxy that Minecraft clients connect to and it "switches" a player to a selected backend Spigot server. Using this special functionality, there are endless possibilities! We can easily separate plugins and worlds into their own servers to avoid plugin conflicts and reduce lag.
I would like to give a huge thanks to everyone involved in making this happen! <3
And I really must give a very special thanks to Schmoller!
Without the hundreds of hours of dedicated coding and building - none of this would be possible.
